The desire to make art has moved Margolis toward abstraction. Spending so much time making these images, sometimes months, allows him to see every square inch of the surface. With each mark a moment in time is captured, and as these moments add up the image is revealed. The result is a series of artifacts that exist in real life. Each a unique object that holds the time and energy it takes to make them.
Scott draws squares and circles on grids, with careful planning he is able to make pictures in a way that is unplanned. This “unplanned planning” gives him the chance to lead and to follow the work to surprising places. The images unfold slowly by building up contrasting and complimenting values that intertwine and overlap. The results engage the eye and inspire the imagination.
